Abstract

A homogeneous mixture of alcohol and petrol, with or without other fuel substances such as benzol, is obtained by the addition of normal butyl alcohol. Thus a mixture of 4.75 volumes of butyl alcohol with 100 volumes of petrol specific gravity 0.729 dissolves in all proportions in a mixture of equal parts of alcohol and benzol, and 100 volumes of petrol mixed with 6.5 volumes of butyl alcohol is soluble in all proportions in alcohol. A mixture of 100 volumes of petrol, 12 volumes of alcohol, and 10 volumes of benzol requires 2.4 volumes of butyl alcohol to render it homogeneous at 0 DEG C., 3.5 volumes at 13 DEG C., and 4.75 volumes at -0.5 DEG C. It is stated that the use of ether, castor oil, phenol, cresols, and amyl alcohol have already been suggested to increase the solubility of petrol in alcohol or alcohol and benzol.
