Abstract
22,595. Jones, H. Sefton-, [McLellan, H. R.]. Oct. 4. Pistons; pistons, attaching to and detaching from rod.-A piston for a steam or internalcombustion engine, which may be of the revolving-cylinder type described in Specification 12,922/06, [Class 110, Rotary engines &c.], consists of a spherical head 10, Fig. 4, secured on the end of the connecting-rod and clasped between two shoes D, E, Fig. 3. The shoes may have tongue-and-slot joints 13, 14, or each shoe may have a projection at one edge entering a recess in the other shoe. Packing-rings may be provided between the shoes and the cylinder and between the shoes and the spherical head; and the head may have pins 18, Fig. 4, entering holes in the shoes. In a modification, shown in Fig. 6, the shoes have cylindrical projections extending beyond the head; and in another modification, shown in Fig. 7, annular shoes are used bolted together and clasping the head between them. In the preceding forms the motive fluid expands the shoes, but the shoes may be formed to exclude the motive fluid, as shown in Fig. 8.
