Combing-machines.-In a combing-machine of the Heilmann type, to allow for the combing of fibres of varying lengths and to increase the working speed of the machine, the upper comb, the nippers, and the feed-device are all carried by a single piece which can be adjusted relatively to the combing-cylinder and detaching- rollers, which are mounted in stationary bearings. The sliver 6 is drawn from the roller 1 and passes through the reciprocating feedmechanism 9, 10, which is journaled on a pivot 11 carried by an arm 12 rigidly secured to the shaft 13. The nippers 14, 15 are carried by levers 23, 17, both pivoted on an axis 16 and controlled by springs 24, 22. The upper nipper 15 is actuated by the cam 20, and the lower nipper is pressed against it by the spring 24, until in its upward movement a screw stop 26 comes in contact with a fixed lug 27 and the nippers are caused to open. The top comb 28 is carried by a pivoted rocking-arm 29. The axes 13, 16 are mounted in a single piece 30, which is stationary while the machine is working, but which can be adjusted about an axis 31 to carry the parts 28, 14, 15, 9, 10 nearer to either the detaching-rollers 32, 33, 34 or the combing-cylinder 37, according as to whether shorter or longer fibres are to be combed. On the shaft of one of the detaching-rollers 34 is mounted a reciprocating wiper 36, which, as it descends, smooths the severed tuft of sliver so that when the next tuft is fed forward the two bind up intimately and uniformly.
