Sheet separators.-Relates to suction separators of the kind that is adapted to be placed at an angle to the top sheet of paper, and consists in means whereby the sucker may automatically adjust itself to a variation in thickness of the sheets. The suckers 1 are secured on a tube 2 journaled in a frame 4, which is capable of both rocking and sliding on a shaft 5 secured to a bracket 6. The bracket 6 is supported by a shaft 7 in brackets 8 on a shaft 9, which is rocked by any suitable means to convey the sucker with its adhering sheet forward to the machine to be fed. The sucker tube is encircled by a spring which tends to roll the suckers forward over the pile, and is also connected by a chain 13 to a quadrant 14, which is capable of being oscillated by a chain 15 secured to a rock-shaft 16, or by other suitable means. A rod 17 connected to the quadrant 14 causes the frame 4 to slide to and fro on the shaft 5. Beneath the ends of the frame 4 are two levers 18 connected by chains 19 to a shaft 20, which is adapted to be rocked to lift the sucker clear of the pile. In operation, the sucker rolls forward over the pile until the suction is sufficiently great to bend up the front edge of the sheet. If it is desired to prevent further movement of the sucker after it has seized the top sheet, a cylinder 23, connected to the vacuum system bv a pipe 26, is provided. As soon as the ports are closed by the sheet, the decrease of pressure in the cylinder 23 causes the piston 24 to move inward against the pressure of a spring 25, and thus to move a detent lever 27 into engagement with ratchet teeth 29 on the sector 14.
