Abstract

16,657. Chameroy, E. July 16. Tension arrangements.-Relates to automatic belttensioning mechanism of the kind in which the driving-pulley f is carried by arms c pivoted on a power shaft a and is geared to the latter so as to be rotated in the opposite direction thereto, the action of the gear and the drag of the belt r causing the pulley to tend to travel round the power shaft, thereby tensioning the belt. Alternatively the arrangement is applicable to the driven pulley. The invention consists in prolonging one of the arms c carrying the pulley f, and pivotally connecting the end l thereof to a spring-pressed rod m which provides an initial pressure to start the tensioning action. Adjustable nuts q on a threaded portion of the rod m regulate the tension of the spring o which bears against a fixed abutment p. The belt may be put out of action by means of a pivoted lever s having a slotted engagement with a pin n on the rod m. To prevent excessive tensioning of the belt, a compensating adjustable spring may be arranged on the slidable rod m or at any other part of the apparatus to come into action to counteract the tensioning-device when the movement of the latter is excessive. As shown in Fig. 4, a compensating-spring x may be arranged on the rod m on the opposite side of the abutment p to limit the movement of the rod by bearing against adjustable nuts u, v on the threaded end thereof. To protect the threaded end, the nut u is provided with a tubular extension z engaging the end coils of the spring x.
