Cotters; staples.-A split pin or cotter having legs of unequal length is provided with a turned-up end a<1> which springs open independently of the rest of the pin, and prevents the withdrawal of the pin from the hole in which it is placed. The end a<1> may have the curved form shown in Fig. 3. The part a<1> may be strengthened at its junction by a rivet, or it may be made separately and secured to the pin by a rivet. Fig. 8 shows a construction in which a guiding-pin c attached to the part a<1> slides in an aperture in the leg a. The invention may be applied to staples having split legs.
