Abstract

12,055. Vickers, Sons, & Maxim, Vickers, T. E., and Benthall, J. L. May 21. Annealing and tempering.-Consists in a heat treatment, similar to that described in Specification 12,752/00, for armour plates and other steel articles, the principal feature of the present process being the two heating and cooling operations which immediately precede the machining and final hardening. The armour plate is (a) forged and rolled at the lowest temperature possible, heated to 1100-1250‹ F., and aircooled, (b) heated to 1400-1500‹ F., bent to shape, and air-cooled to 800-900‹ F., (c) reheated to 1400-1500‹ F. and hardened by oil or water, or heated to 1650-1800‹ F., and hardened by air-cooling, (d) re-heated to 1150- 1350‹ F. and air-cooled, (e) re-heated to 1150- 1250‹ F., and dipped in hot water or sprinkled with cold water, and re-heated to 1050-1150‹ F., and again dipped or sprinkled, to obtain a fibrous structure of the metal, and (f) machined, laid on sand while its face is rapidly heated to 1800-1970‹ F., and the whole plate finally douched in water. For thick plates, operation (d) is omitted, and the two re - heatings and coolings of (e) are reversed in order.
