Abstract

11,920. Gardner, J. W. May 20. Overwinding, preventing; regulating and control-transmitting gear.-An automatic controlling-gear for winding-engines is arranged (1) to prevent starting in the wrong direction, (2) to shut off steam and to apply the brake when the speed is excessive or in event cf accident to the engineman, and (3) to bring the engine to rest gradually under heavy lowering loads. The apparatus comprises a pair of rotating vertical screws L mounted between side supports I and each carrying two travelling nuts N, N' with stepped teeth 0, O<1>. Adjacent to the path of the teeth O, O<1> is arranged a catch P adjustable horizontally by a governor J and connected by a link 2 to a lever 1. An arm I of this lever is adapted to release a weighted rod C linked to the throttle-operating rod H, and a second arm of the lever 1 is coupled by a pin-and-slot connexion to a lever W operating a steam brake bar V. In the event of excessive speed on nearing the end of the wind, the teeth O engage the path P and operate the throttle and brake. If the engine is started in the wrong direction, the catch P is raised by the lower tooth O<1> of the nut N', so as to cut off steam, and the brake is applied by a lug 6 on the rear face of the nut engaging a trip lever and thereby releasing a weighted bar 9 coupled to the brake bar V. To prevent racing of the engine during any part of the wind, the governor J is connected by a link Q, lever R, and rod S to the lever 1. The brake bar V may also be actuated directly from the rod S.
