Abstract

Drilling - machines.-A device for centring shafts has a spindle h capable of being moved longitudinally by means of a rack and pinion, or a lever, acting on a sleeve q, which moves the spindle by means of thrust collars s, t, the spindle being also given a rotary motion by means of a pulley l and a sleeve m mounted in a bearing of the machine. At the fore end of the spindle is mounted a universal chuck, which holds the rollers w, capable of rotary motion on the end of the shaft to be centred, and a tool k concentric with the chuck to centre the shaft. The longitudinal motion of the spindle is limited by a stop 2, and the shaft is supported by an adjustable holder, f, which has two V-jaws x, operated by screws to hold any size of shaft. In a modification for use on large shafts, Fig. 4, the chuck is mounted to rotate on a sleeve independently of the tool k, the tool only being given longitudinal motion by means of a spindle h and a lever 8, which engages a slot in a depending portion of a boss 3 between thrust collars on the spindle. A disconnecting-device 13 is fitted to allow motion of the lever without corresponding motion of the shaft.
