Abstract
127. Schar, F., and Schmid, M. von. Jan. 2. Bending horseshoes; dies; welding; shearing- adjuncts.-In a machine for making chains, a heated bar is fed in. and a blank is cut off, bent around a mandrel, and made to engage the link previously formed ; the link is then turned in its plane to bring its length into the axis of the chain, and electrodes are brought up to engage the joint, whereupon the link is jumped up, swaged to remove bulges, and the n turned through ninety degrees to receive the next blank, which has meanwhile been bent. An advancing slide 3 cuts off the length of bar 1 and bends it about a mandrel 6, transversely-moving benders 8, Fig. 4, bringing it to the form ready to engage the previously-formed link, and jaws 10 closing the link when such engagement has been made. A mandrel with an eccentric pin 12, Fig. 7, then engages the link and turns it through ninety degrees in its own plane. Electrodes 24, Fig. 10, then move forward to beat the joint, the link being pressed forward by a fork 15, transversely movable on a slide 17 which engages the link at its forward end and presses it against the back portion of the mandrel 6. The forward movement of the slide 17 is arrested by a stop 28, and the welding- current is cut-off just before this stop is engaged by a sleeve 29 engaging a trip-lever 31 ; this trip-lever is previously set by a hooked rod 33. The burr is removed by dies 35, Fig. 3, the lower die is brought into operative position by a cam 36, and the upper die is operated upon by a hammer when it has been brought down to the work. The fork 15 serves the double purpose of jumping-up the heated link, and of turning the finished chain and supporting it during the formation of the next link ; it is moved in its slide 17 by rods 20, and is periodically moved through ninety degrees by a rack 22.
