Abstract

22,368. Leconte, E. Oct. 21. Hides and skins, raw, treating.-Prior to tanning, hides are treated with dilute sulphurous acid which forms simultaneously a depilating and swelling-bath and also acts as an antiseptic and a deodorant and removes blood and adherent impurities. The hair can be separated from the hide in connected sheets by means of an ordinary tool. The bides are immersed for a period of three or four days in a bath of sulphurous acid of from 0À1 to 0À3 BÚ., after which they are unhaired and fleshed in the usual way, no liming being necessary. They are then scoured and tanned. The sulphurous acid may be produced chemically, for example by acting on sulphite, disulphite, or hypo sulphite of soda with acid.
