Abstract
4129. Le Rond, L. J. J.-B. Feb. 28, 1907, [date applied for under Section 91 of Patents &c. Act, 1907]. Combustion-product engines.-In connexion with an engine working with a mixture of a gas and a vapour as described in Specification No. 1849, A.D. 1908, an air-compressor without clearance, a heater, a separator for water and air, and a general arrangement of a four-cylinder engine for a motor road vehicle are described. The end F, Fig. 1, of the compressor cylinder forms a valve and is of the same shape as the end of the piston, by which it is moved at the end of the stroke. It is loaded by a spring held in place by a guide G which is self-centring. The cover B is secured by hinged bolts b. The piston end may be conical or spherical, and may be provided with valves, as shown in Figs. 9 and 18, the former being adapted for use with a forked connecting-rod. Fig. 18 shows a composite valve admitting air through several annular rims. A light type of admission and exhaust valve for dealing with larger quantities of fluid at a high engine speed is shown in Fig. 10, in which communication with the cylinder is effected through a port 0 and with the admission or exhaust through a port P. The valve body is perforated and the seat c is kept in place by a cap d held down by a cross-shaped lever M<1>, Figs. 11 and 12, loaded by a bolt b<11>. Water which has been added during the compression of the air for cooling purposes is separated from the air by the apparatus shown in Fig. 17, in which the mixture enters at X, dry air leaving at Y and water at Z. The dry air and water are led to the heater shown in Fig. 16, entering by pipes y, z respectively. The air moves towards the centre as shown by the arrows passing up a coil 2, a portion taking part in the combustion of fuel entering by a pipe U and controlled by a conical valve, the remainder passing around the burner. The products of combustion mix with steam generated in the coil z' and issuing from the orifices 1, the mixture of products and steam leaving for the engine by the outlet T. The engine cylinders are provided with relief valves and the piston may be shaped to direct the water towards the valves. Tanks may be placed between the compressor and heater and between the heater and engine to prevent fluctuations of pressure. On a motor - vehicle, the cylinders and pumps are carried by the frame shown in Fig. 15, comprising four easily accessible panels and provided at the bottom with a light metal cover Q. The cylinder cranks are about 82 degrees in advance of those of the pumps. The engine exhaust is passed into a condenser and the water is returned to the tanks. In the Specification in the original form, as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a), it is stated that for a motor-vehicle, the whole arrangement may comprise an air-filter of metal netting, and an airwasher with water, glycerine, or other liquid, and that by placing the cylinders vertically the engine may be applied to a ship. This subject-matter does not appear in the Complete Specification as accepted.
