Abstract
14,399. Aitchison, J. June 22. Cleaning feathers &c.-An apparatus for dressing, cleaning, and disinfecting feathers, hair, fibre, down, flocks, &c. by agitation in a steam-jacketed chamber is provided with means for exhausting and for blowing air, for the removal of dust &c., and for the transference of the materials under treatment. The material is fed through hoppers B and is drawn to the chamber E by suction set up by the fan G; the valve D is then closed and the beaters 0 are set in motion. The dust passes through perforations to the vessel E<2> and then through a pipe to the receptacle H. Steam is admitted to the jacket E', and afterwards to the chamber E until the contents are thoroughly disinfected. When steam is cut off from the chamber, the cock D is opened to admit air, which, being heated by its passage through the steam jacket, dries the feathers or other material. The contents are then discharged by opening the valves M and reversing the fan so that air is sent through the pipe K.
