Abstract

10,605. Byrom, J. May 7. Springs; undercarriages.-A pneumatic cushion which is adapted to be used between the body and undercarriage of a motor-car or other road or railway vehicle, or for supporting the saddles or handle-bars of bicycles, is composed of an upper chamber A filled with air and closed at its lower side by a flexible diaphragm C to which is attached a plunger B. The outer edge of the diaphragm is secured by a ring D and nuts F screwed upon studs E, and also by small pins screwed or driven into the chamber A and arranged between the studs E. The plunger B, which is of less diameter than the chamber A, is secured to the diaphragm by an internal plate I and rivets J. The air is preferably contained in a bag K fitted with a valve L. Fig. 3 shows the plunger B secured to a tubular framed chassis by a saddle piece M and elbow bolts N, while the chamber A is formed with lugs P for attachment to the body. The diaphragm C may be formed of leather, or of a number of layers of canvas, previously treated with india-rubber and vulcanized, and arranged with their warps crossing obliquely. The casing A may be formed to contain more than one of these springs, and in this way a bicycle saddle may be mounted upon three springs, two of which may be disposed at the rear and one at the peak, or the three springs may be attached to the steering-head, the handle-bar being connected to the plunger B. When a number of springs are used, they may be connected by a common inlet pipe in order to secure uniform air pressure.
