Abstract

6422. Tuttle, J. H., and Frost, C. B. March 17, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Printing-apparatus combined with apparatus for wrapping-up for transit; printing on labels, tickets, &c. ; feeding-apparatus for webs; rotary machines; set-off, preventing; delivery apparatus cutting- apparatus. - Strips of paper, wound from a reel and kept in tension by a spring, are passed over printing and blotting wheels to a gumming or moistening device, after which they are wound round packages for sealing. The required length of strips is cut off by a specially-shaped knife outside the casing enclosing the whole apparatus. The two parts 1, 2 of the casing are held together by a hinge 4 and a spring clip 5, and all the working parts are preferably attached to the part 1 of the casing, but a duplicate set may be mounted in the part 2. The strip of paper A, previously gummed or not, is wound from a roll 6 and kept in tension by a brake 8 and spring 9. It passes round a guidepulley 10 to the printing-devices, comprising an impression roller 11, and a removable printing-roller of suitable but variable size, the spindle of which is slidable in the slot 32, and which is inked by the roller 30. After passing a blotting-roll 13 and guide-roll 14, the strip is led over a bar 15 projecting transversely from a weighted lever 16 pivoted at 17, and also over the transversely-positioned serrated outer end of the lever 16, thus being kept normally out of contact with the damping or gumming roll 24, which revolves in a trough 23 supplied with water or mucilage from a reservoir 18. When a packet such as B is to be sealed, the end of the strip A is dabbed on to the roller 24,and then stuck on to the parcel, and sufficient strip is then pulled out to seal the parcel. During this pulling action, the lever 16 is lowered, so that the strip comes into contact with the roll 23 for a greater or less distance according to the position of the guide-roll 25, which may be raised so far that the strip is not depressed sufficiently to touch the roller 24. When sufficient tape has been drawn out, it is severed against a pointed \/-shaped knife 27 adjustably attached to the outside of the casing, so that sufficient strip is left projecting to commence sealing the next package. The whole operation is performed without soiling the fingers with moistened gum &c.
