Abstract

1461. Ziemsen, F. C. Jan. 19. Scouring rivers and the like.-An appliance for use in cutting reeds, water plants, &c. growing in ponds, brooks, canals, and rivers consists of a long flexible metal band or wire provided with plain or toothed cutting-edges. Fig. 1 shows a cutting-band with four serrated edges. A somewhat similar band is formed by riveting together two angle-shaped strips of metal. Fig. 3 shows a metal strip with teeth projecting in several directions. Another band comprises a central core with two spiral cutting-edges. Another consists of a flat strip twisted about its longitudinal axis. Another comprises a wire with four longitudinal sets of teeth. Fig. 7 shows a cutter formed by twisting a flat strip of metal. Teeth may be formed in one or both edges. The cutter is placed across the river and dragged up stream while being pulled backwards and forwards.
