Abstract
28,509. Allgemeine Elektricitõts-Ges. Jan. 2, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Lightning-arresters &c.-In lightning-arresters and like protecting-devices for electric installations, each electrode is formed from two parts relatively movable under the influence of electrostatic attraction and repulsion resulting from a super-charge, thus lessening the normal spark-gap. Means may also be provided for indicating at a distance the operation of the device. The form shown comprises two electrodes connected to line and earth respectively, each having a fixed member 5, 8, Fig. 12, and a movable member 6, 7. Arc-rupturing horns 13, 14 are fitted. The movable members may be adapted to close contacts 15, 16 in an alarm circuit when they move under the influence of a high potential. The Specification as published under the Act of 1901 describes the invention as consisting in the provision in apparatus of the above type of at least one electrode formed of relatively movable members. In one construction, means are provided for breaking by a current of air the arc produced on discharge. In the simplest form, Fig. 2, the insulated electrode consists of two leaves a, b, which separate when highly charged, thus lessening the spark-gap from the leaf b to the earth electrode c. In modifications, the leaf a may be fixed ; or the electrode c, or one leaf of it, may be movable under the influence of the attraction of the leaf b. In other forms, Figs. 9 and 10, a movable part b may be mounted on a shaft a<1>, carrying an arm b<1> from which the spark passes to the terminal c. Fig. 13 shows an arrangement in which a permanent air current, maintained by a coil or lamp filament h placed in the bottom of a casing A as shown, is utilized to break the arc between the movable leaves b, c. This subject-matter does not appear in the Complete Specification as accepted. The Figures in this abridgment are numbered as in the Speci. ficition as originally published, Fig. 12 alone appearing in the Specification as accepted.
