Abstract
28,507. Rees, E. S. G. Dec. 13. Turbines.-A centrifugal impeller of the pressure producing chamber type, which may also be of the self-regulating type, such as is described in Specifications Nos. 4810, 22,490, 26,609, 26,610, and 27,615, A.D. 1906, [Abridgment Class Pumps &c.], or a series of such impellers is mounted on one of the shafts to be clutched and delivers liquid to a turbine secured to the other shaft. The speed at which the liquid is discharged from the impeller and consequently the speed of the rotor or turbine may be varied continuously by throttling or by-passing the liquid. Figs. 1 and 2 show a clutch formed of a pump b secured to the shaft b<1> and having forwardly-directed nozzles c delivering into the buckets d of the turbine e which is secured to the driven shaft e<1>. The pipes f, g conduct the liquid to the eye a of the pump through the valve.g'.. Fig. 2<a> shows a different arrangement of the pump and turbine, which are respectively of the kind described in Specifications Nos. 4810 and 14,253, A.D. 1906. In this case the speed energy of the liquid leaving the pump is converted into pressure in a suitable vortex chamber or expanding ducts, from which it is led to the eye of the turbine through the valve h<1>. The liquid may be discharged from the turbine into a fixed casing having adjustable cut-waters or a free vortex chamber connected to the pump inlet, or it may be discharged directly into the eye of the impeller, and in this case the fixed casing may be dispensed with. This arrangement is shown in Fig. 3, the outlets c of the pump b directing the fluid into the curved passages d<1> of a turbine wheel. By constructing one or more of the pumps with rearwardly-directed outlets as described in the above Specifications, the apparatus may be made practically self-regulating. This arrangement is shown in Fig. 4, the nozzle c being rearwardly directed. The shaft may be mechanically clutched by the claw coupling j, j<1> when the shafts are travelling at the same speed. The discharge passage f may be fitted with a drain pipe f<1> to draw off the liquid when the parts are so directly connected. For reverse rotation of the driven shaft, another turbine l surrounds the first turbine d as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 and may be mechanically clutched to the shaft as in Fig. 5, while at the same time the turbine e is secured to the rigid casing by a pin m.
