Abstract
19,709. Bastian, C. O., and Calvert, G. Sept. 4. Incandescent lamps; vacuum tubes.- Leading-in wires of copper or a copper alloy, for incandescent lamps, mercury-vapour lamps, &c., are sealed into glass or other vitreous material after previous coating with a metallic salt, such as lead chloride, which prevents oxidation. A phosphor-bronze wire, for example, may be dipped into fused lead chloride at those parts which are to come into contact with the glass. The metallic salt employed preferably has a cleansing action on the wire, and may be adapted to remove occluded gases, or the sealing may be conducted in a stream of gas which will remove them. According to the Provisional Specification, the metallic salt may be dispensed with, preferably when alloys having the same coefficient of expansion as glass are used, sealing taking place in a stream of hydrogen or other inert gas which keeps the wire clean. It is stated that leading-in wires of silicon-bronze, nickel-iron, and iron may be used, as well as various fusible salts. It is also stated that the coating may be applied to the glass instead of to the wire.
