Abstract

11,053. Blanchard, L. E. May 25, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Speed indicators; odometers.-A speedometer, specially adapted for automobiles, is provided with a dial having two sets of graduations and two pomters, one indicating speed and the other the distance travelled on the journey, and is combined with a totalizing-counter of convenient form. From a main shaft h, Fig, 5, there is driven through a pinion a shaft p, Fig. 7, on which is mounted a governor consisting of weights j, carried by links k pivoted to sleeves o, n, the latter being free to slide on the shaft against a spring 10. The speed pointer g, actuated through a pinion 21 and a rack 20 on an arm 18, is moved in one direction by a spring 23, which presses a pin 17 on the arm 18 against a lever 12 mounted on a post 13 and pressed against the sleeve n by a spring 15, and in the other by the governor spring. The distance pointer f, Fig. 3, is secured to the wheel 36, Fig. 5, connected by a lever 44 pivoted to the base-plate and an arm 47 to the shaft 48 of the totalizer 75, which carries a depending arm 49, Fig. 3, rocked by a pin 50 on the wheel 51. The arm 47 is moved in the direction of the arrow at every revolution of the wheel 51, and is returned to its original position by a spring, thus rotating the gear-wheel 36. The wheel 36 is prevented from moving more than one tooth at a time by a pawl 41 and a projection 72 on the arm 44. The wheel 51 makes one revolution for every mile travelled, and is driven from the main shaft by gearing 55, 56, 58, 59, 61, 62, 64. The hand f is set to zero by a gear-wheel 81 on depression of a shaft 80, which forces along the slide 85, a pin 86 thereon rocking the bar 46 and throwing the pawl 72 out of gear with the wheel.
