10,190. Phelps, G. H. May 1. Stocking suspenders.-In stocking suspenders of the stud-and-slot type, the shank of the e stud is covered with a multiple sheath resembling rubber, felt, or leather. Specification No. 21,249, A.D. 1894, is referred to. The sheath D, Fig. 5, may be cut from a tube made (1) of paper strips wound spirally over a mandrel X, Fig. 6, and subsequently covered either by braiding as at G, Fig. 9, or with tex- ; tile material wound round and cemented on to it ;: (2) by winding textile instead of paper strips on the mandrel, the outer layer being cemented down as before; or (3) by covering an inner dry paper tube with an outer layer of paper impregnated with a solution of glycerine and gelatin and adding a covering of textile material. The solution is applied outside in each case as a finishing, and may be treated with chromic acid and exposed to sunlight to render it waterproof. A tube with a thin, paper or fabric foundation may be dipped repeatedly in the solution, so as to form sheaths with a tough outer layer Z, Fig. 15.
