Abstract
5547. T³tola, H. March 7. Centrifugal pumps.-The vessel h of the pressure pump shown in Fig. 1 is caused to rotate with the suction pipe a by toothed gearing c, d driven by hand or otherwise. It is fitted with vanes m, Fig. 3, and radial nozzles l, through which the water is discharged into an hermeticallyclosed air vessel i. The air pressure of this chamber forces the water into the outlet k. For starting, the vessel h and the pipe a, which has a valve x at the bottom, are filled with water through an aperture p, which is then closed by a plug r. Fig. 2 shows the apparatus modified to act as a lift pump. The chamber h is closed, but the outer chamber i is open. For starting, the vessel h only is filled, the upper end of the pipe a being above the water level. When the pump is rotated, discharge takes place through the nozzles l, and the necessary suction effect is produced in the pipe a. The suction pipe may be made in two portions, the lower being fixed.
