Abstract

3089. Jensen, P., [Maemecke, E.]. Feb. 8. Composition fuel.-A mixture or alloy of silicon and magnesium is used instead of aluminium to form reactive mixtures with metallic compounds for heating purposes, for welding metals, especially rails, tubes, &c., or for obtaining metals and alloys. Silicon may be replaced by ferro-silicon or other alloy of silicon. Other reducing-agents such as aluminium, calcium, barium, strontium, or sodium may be used in addition and inactive metals such as iron may also be added ; for example, copper may be used with a mixture containing a manganese compound to obtain an alloy of these metals. Alloys may also be obtained by reducing compounds of different metals, and the method is applicable to the production of chromium, manganese, molybdenum, ferro-titanium, and other metals. Employment of excess of the metallic compound ensures the freedom of the resulting metal from silicon and magnesium. Metallic oxides, sulphides, sulphates, nitrates, or halides may be employed, and proportions are given for various mixtures containing oxides of iron. The substances should in all cases be finely granulated.
