Abstract

25,187. British Algin Co., and Ingham, T. Dec. 5. Alginates.-Solutions of double salts of alginic acid sufficiently pure for technical purposes are prepared by the following methods :-(1) The solution obtained by extracting seaweed with alkali is neutralized or made slightly acid by addition of a suitable inorganic or organic acid, and a solution is added of a soluble salt of aluminium, zinc, copper, cadmium, iron, or other metal, the alginate of which is insoluble in water but soluble in alkaline solutions. The precipitated alginate is separated and if necessary washed, and is dissolved by addition of an alkali hydrate or carbonate or aqueous ammonia or ammonium carbonate. (2) A solution of a salt of one of the above metals is added to a solution of a soluble alginate of, say, ammonium sodium, potassium, or magnesium, the precipitate, mother - liquor, and precipitating - agent are well mixed, and alkali or alkali carbonate is added and the whole is mixed till complete solution is effected.
