Abstract

134. Harris, H. Jan. 3. Metallurgical furnaces; discharging. - Relates to means whereby two molten materials, such as matte and slag, which have separated in a smelting- furnace into two well-defined strata, may be withdrawn and separately distributed in a continuous flow, without disturbing the separation of the materials within the furnace. The slag S, Fig. 1, and matte M within the furnace, flow through the outlet 5 of the furnace into the distributing- box shown. The box is divided into two divisions 19, 20 by a partition 12, at the bottom of which is an aperture 13. The matte and slag flow into the division 19 until the head of matte and slag balances the head of matte and slag, together with the blast pressure, in the furnace. The partition 12 prevents anything but matte from passing into the division 20, in which the matte rises until its head balances the head in the division 19 and in the furnace. Overflow outlets 14, 15 of variable height are provided with sponts 17, as shown in Fig. 2, and allow the slag and matte to discharge separately. A preferable form of the distributing-box is shown in Fig. 3. The division 20 is bolted to the side of the division 19, and the partition 12 is formed as a water jacket lined on each side with fire-brick. The outlets 14, 15 are more conveniently situated for the operator. Emergency tapping-outlets 21, 22 are situated at the bottom of each division to allow for the withdrawal of the entire contents.
