The casing 2 is divided by partitions 5<a> into compartments of graduated size, each containing a wheel 3. Each wheel has two rings of blades 4 separated by a flange 5. A distributing and reversing valve 7 has diagonally-arranged ports 9, Fig. 6, so that steam is supplied to the first ring of the first wheel and then exhausts to the second ring and then to the succeeding wheels. The exhaust passages are fitted with reversing-valves 20, In a modification, each wheel forms one stage in the expansion.
