Abstract

20,469. Carlton, R., and Edwards, A. M. Sept. 22. Ellipsographs &c.--A machine for cutting-out ellipses, circles, or oval fibres from sheet material to form table mats, napkins, doyleys, &c., or for marking or indicating such figures, is constructed with a slotted arm 6 bent at right-angles at the ends, one of which is formed as a foot 4 and mounted on a pivot 3 extending between side flanges 2 on a supporting-base 1. Two sides of the foot 4 ate shaped so that the arm 6 may be held in the horizontal position shown, or in a vertical position, and vibration due to wear is counteracted by means of an adjusting-screw 9. The operating-handle 15 is fixed to a shaft 14, which is freely mounted in a slide 12 capable of moving along the slot in the arm 6, and the lever end of the shaft carries a graduated bar 19, along which a slide 20 at the upper end of a shaft 21 can be adjusted and secured by a screw 23 extending through the shaft. The shaft 21 is mounted in a link 32, which is pivoted to the free ends of arms 34, 35 pivoted to diagonally-opposite lugs 36, 39 on the arm 6, and a bar 22 carrying a longitudinally and laterally adjustable cutterholder 26 is fixed to the lower end of the shaft. The cutter 30, or an indicator or marker, is secured by a grooved block 29 and nut in the slotted end of a bent shank 29 swivelling in a socket 28 in the holder. A spring 17 between the slide 12 and the handle-bar 15 normally keeps the cutter clear of the material, which is clamped on a worktable, and a screw 18 regulates the extent to which the operative parts may be depressed. A levelling- device may be attached to the arm 6. The hinge connections between the link 32 and bars 34, 35 are formed by making a pillar at the free end of each bar to enter bushes at the ends of the link, set-screws screwed into the top of the pillars retaining the parts together, and the fixed ends of the bars are formed with bushes to fit on studs secured to the lugs on the arm 6. Fig. 1 shows the machine arranged for cutting ellipses by the rotation and depression of the handle-bar, the distance between the cutter and a centering-pin mounted in a central opening in the set-screw 23 being made equal to the minor axis, and the slide 12 being adjusted until the distance between the shafts 14, 21, as shown by he scale 19, is equal to half the difference between the major and minor axes. If the slide 12 be fixed to the scale at the opposite side of the shaft 14, an ellipse having its major axis parallel to the arm 6, instead of as shown, will be cut. By disconnecting the arm 34 from the lug 36 and securing it to the lug 38, the machine is arranged for cutting or marking ovals or egg shaped figures, and, by adjusting the slide 12 so that the axis of the shafts 14, 21 are coincident, and then locking it in this position, circles can be cut or marked.
