Hulling maize &c.-Maize or other grain is skinned, broken, and degerminated between opposing toothed faces reciprocating across each other in the direction of the feed of the material. In the form shown, a, Fig. 3, is a flat plate with pyramidal or facetted teeth on both sides reciprocated vertically between fixed plates b, b, provided with similar teeth, by means of the crank k and rod l. The grain is fed to the apparatus by the hopper d, which, in the case of a pair of reciprocating plates, is made double as shown. The fixed plates bare adjusted in position by shafts e, passing through brackets g fixed to the plates b, mounted eccentrically in bearings f, Fig. 2, and carrying arms h the position of which is regulated by a rod i and screw and hand-wheel i<1>, so that the positions of all the plates may be regulated at once. The rods i may be attached together so as to form a rectangular frame by means of which the positions of all the plates can be regulated through one hand-wheel. The opposing surfaces may be cylindrical or curved, and the material may ba fed by a horizontal cylindrical arrangement, or a travelling or reciprocating band or chain device may be used.
