Abstract

9485. Emge, W. April 25. Splints.-A splint or support for a broken leg consists of two frames 10, 11, Figs. 1 and 2, carrying pieces 32 of cloth and hinged together at 14, the angle between the frames being adjusted by means of bars 15 which are pivoted to the lateral parts 17 of the front frame and secured by thumb-screws 20 in guiding-slits 18 carried by the lateral parts 19 of the rear frame. Slide-blocks 21 carried by the parts 17, 19 embrace the cross-bars 13, the blocks 22 at the front ends of the frames 17 being hinged to these frames and provided with adjusting-screws 25 working through the vertical side-pieces 26 of the frame 10. Clamping-screws 27 are provided for securing the parts 17, 19 in the adjusted position. The pieces of cloth are passed round the longitudinal bars at one side of the apparatus and secured by hooks and eyes 33, and over the opposite bars to rollers 35, 36 having points 37 over which small eyes in the cloth are hooked. The rollers are supported in bearings 38, and provided at one end with a button 39 and at the other end with a ratchet-wheel 40 and pawl 41. Or each frame may be provided with several rollers so that the pieces of cloth may be separately adjusted. The rear end of the apparatus rests on the bed mattress, while the front end is secured by a clamp 28 to the lower end of the bedstead.
