Abstract
3389. Brown, A., and Shanks, J. Feb. 11. Hatches and hatchways, fastenings for. A fastening for securing tarpaulins or canvas coverings to hatches consists of a bracket A bolted at the end a to the hatch coaming, while at the other end a<1> it is disc shaped and has on its inner side a deep vertical recess a<2>, the faces of which are bevelled in opposite directions. The locking-part consists of a disc C having a cross-bar bevelled to fit the recess a<2> and a spindle c<1> which passes through an eye in the fixed disc a<1>. To tighten the fastening against the batten E, the end of the spindle c' is struck, and the disc C turned by a handle on the spindle c<1>, a knob on the disc C, or by a lever H inserted in a hole G, as shown. The cross-bar then exerts a wedging action and locks the batten.
