Abstract

505. Anderson, H. P. H., and Wilding, J. Jan.8. Lift valves; selfclosing valves; pressure - regulating valves.-The selfclosing valve, shown in Fig. 1, comprises a lift valve B, seating against a web a in the casing, an attached piston B<3>, sliding through hat-leather or like packing at the lower end of a cushioning- chamber D, and an attached stem terminating in a push-knob B<2> outside. The valve consists, preferably, of a leather or composition disc B secured by a nut F. The cushion chamber D and the inlet side of the valve are connected by a hole d in the valve-stem, a non-return ball valve being fitted in the nut F to close the inlet orifice of the hole. When the knob is pressed down to open the valve, water passes through the stem into the chamber D. On releasing the knob, the fluid pressure acts to close the valve, but the closing is resisted by the fluid in the chamber D ; this fluid is gradually discharged through the bye-pass G to the inlet, the time taken being regulated by a cock g. Concussion is thereby prevented. In a modification, the valve is opened by a cam lever. Two or more valves may be connected together, and operated by levers. The stop valve, shown in Fig. 5, is operated by a cam lever and has the end of the spindle screwed and fitted with a hand-wheel for holding the valve against its seat. Fig. 7 shows the invention adapted to a reducing-valve ; the stem B<1> slides in a guide part of the casing, and a spring J is provided to counteract the fluid pressure.
