Abstract

24,183. Deacle, W. G. Nov. 7. Corkscrews and cork-drawers.-Relates to a handoperated machine with a corkscrew for uncorking a bottle and releasing the cork from the screw. Fig. 2 shows a section of the barrel of the apparatus, which is mounted on a fixed pedestal. A movable pivot S is provided for a handle C on a short link, itself pivoted at the opposite end to the pedestal, so as to allow the trunnions H on the handle to slide longitudinally in a slot in the barrel. A spindle E, into the end of which the corkscrew F is screwed, has a right-handed worm at each end, these being engaged by studs J in nuts K, which are capable of sliding a fixed distance in grooves on the inside of the barrel. During the first part of the downward stroke of the handle, the nuts K slide, and the spindle E is moved downwards without rotating, by the nut G actuated by the trunnions and containing balls which engage a central left-handed worm on the spindle. The bottle neck is inserted into a holder N, and the nuts K cease to slide when the corkscrew touches the cork, further movement of the handle causing the nut G to rotate the spindle so that the screw enters the cork. When the handle is raised, the nuts K first slide in the barrel, raising the spindle without rotation and drawing the cork out of the bottle. The nuts K then cease to slide, and the spindle is rotated in the opposite direction, thus freeing the cork. The right-handed worms terminate at their upper ends in insets which the studs J occupy during the withdrawing operation.
