Abstract
15,486. Nisbet, J. R., and Bowden's Patents Syndicate, E. M. July 13. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to steering and controlling devices for automobiles and like vehicles, in which the controlling-levers are fixed to the steering-pillar so that they are readily accessible to the driver. Fig. 3 shows a section and Fig. 4 a plan of one form of the invention. The steering- wheel c is attached to a tube a, which rotates upon the fixed tube b and actuates the usual steering- mechanism through a worm-wheel x and spur gear y. Down the centre of the tube b pass Bowden mechanisms, as described in Specification No. 25,325, A.D. 1896, [Abridgment Class Mechanism &c.], leading to the several devices which it is desired to operate. In the form shown in the Figure, the ends of the inextensible members l are attached to levers j having thumb-pieces u in close proximity to the hand-wheel c. The abutments p for the incompressible members q are fixed to baseplates v secured to the framework r. In another modification the levers j are vertical and placed immediately above the tube b, in which case, the inextensible members l pass through holes in a metallic socket, which is fitted in the top of the tube b and which serves as the abutment for the non-compressible members. A third modification is similar to the last, but the levers are normally horizontal and are raised into a vertical position when actuated, the member l being attached on the same side of the fulcrum as the lever. In each case, a circumferential groove is provided in the lever to take the inextensible member. Any number of levers may be used.
