Abstract
3791. Jackson, W. M. Feb. 18. Mixing gases.-To produce a reducing- flame of high temperature for heating, welding, soldering, brazing, &c. iron, steel, and the like, by the combustion of oxygen and acetylene, or of oxygen and a mixture of acetylene and coal gas, water gas, &c., without previously compressingthe acetylene, the surplus pressure of highlycompressed oxygen from the container C is utilized by means of an injector I to draw or force acetylene or a mixture of acetylene and other gas to the blowpipe or other burner B<1>. In the construction shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, the high-pressure oxygen is supplied through flexible metallic or other strong tubing T', the acetylene through tubing i<1>, and the other gas, if any, through tubing j<1>, lighting-back being prevented by forming the head of the blowpipe burner in the manner shown in Fig. 6. The tube j<1> may, however, be dispensed with, in which case the acetylene and the coal gas or its equivalent are mixed in the acetylene-gas holder M, Fig. 2, by means of a circular or other board p, carried by bent strips p<1>, and operated by handles p<2>. The acetylene generator, gauges, valves, and other fittings may be of known construction, and the invention may be adapted to portable apparatus.
