Abstract

13,271. Mendham, C. F. June 11. Measured quantities, delivering.-Treacle, syrups, tar, paint, birdlime, heated pitch, and other viscous liquids are forced from a cylinder c so as to flow out through an annular valve m which cuts off sharply and is supplied with an annular current of air to prevent the substance from adhering. The valve seat n is fitted into the lower side of the passage h from the cylinder, in the bevelled mouth of a short perforated delivery tube j which crosses the passage and screws into a collar on its upper side. The valve is the sharply bevelled end of a tube m, which extends down from a piston s in a cylinder r, and contains a tube p to form an annular passage for air from the underside of the piston where the valve tube has holes t. The piston can be lifted but not lowered by means of a rod x, which can be raised and lowered with a screw sleeve w by means of a lever 3, and which can be screwed up and down through the sleeve. A spring v intervenes between the piston and the bottom of the sleeve w, and a spring bolt 11 is provided to engage a collar 10 on the valve tube when raised. The lever 3 forms part of a three-armed lever which is connected by a link 8 to the slide valve of the forcing cylinder and by a link 19 to a bell crank 17 which can draw the bolt. On pulling the hand-lever 5 from the position shown towards the left-hand, the slide-valve g is moved so as to close the port e and open the port f ; at the same time the valve m is opened and held in its opened position by the detent 11. Liquid under pressure from the supplypipe b then enters the cylinder c and, acting through the piston d, forces the liquid out through the passage h and delivery-tube j until the head 15 of the piston-rod reaches the bell crank 17, whereupon the spring v is compressed, and, when such compression has reached a suitable degree, the detent 11 is tripped. The valve m then descends under the action of the spring v, and the piston s compresses the air in the lower part of the cylinder r and forces it out through the annular nozzle at the bottom of the valve m on to the valve-seat n so as to cut the liquid column and prevent the formation of dropping strings of liquid. The air, after impinging on the seat n, is drawn up through the interior of the pipe p to the space on the upper side of the piston s, thus preventing excessive pressure in the hollow upper part of the column of liquid before it is cut. In a modified form of apparatus, an auxiliary annular nozzle is arranged around the exterior of the orifice of the delivery-tube j, and with this arrangement the valve may be made solid and open downwards.
