Abstract

8664. Paulsen, P. April 14. Valves and valve gear.-Relates to valve mechanism for engines, especially those employed for operating rams, pumps, air-compressors, or other engines in which the work is done during one stroke, but not during the return stroke. The action can be rendered automatic and continuous, or intermittent, so that the piston will make an outstroke and return and then stop. Fig. 2 shows a vertical section, and Fig. 3 a sectional plan. The hydraulic ram 3 is thrust forwards by the steam acting behind the piston 1. Steam is distributed to the cylinder 2 by a piston slide valve 5 which is actuated by fluid under pressure distributed by an auxiliary slide valve 7. The auxiliary valve is worked by tappet gear 14, 16, which derives its motion, through a reducing-lever 10, either from a rod 13 attached to the piston, or from the pistonrod. To prevent too sudden movements of the main valve 5, the ports controlled by the auxiliary valve are branched, so that one branch of the admission port is opened before the exhaust takes place at the other side. The passages 25, 26 of the main cylinder are also branched, one part serving only for admission and the other only for exhaust. This is in order to permit of controlling- valves being inserted in the admission ports at 29, 30. To the valve 30, the gear shown in Fig 1 may be attached, whereby, after it has been opened to start the engine by the handle 31, it is closed by the tappet 34 on the completion of the return stroke, so that the piston comes to rest.
