Abstract

7419. Frank, S. April 10. Squirting.-Relates to the manufacture by extrusion of tubes, rods, wires, &c. from one piece of material or from several pieces united by the pressure exerted during extrusion. The plunger used is of small diameter, and the material, in a fluid or plastic state, is fed to the plunger cylinder through a suitable channel, and continuously compressed at each stroke to issue through a die in continuous form. If soft metals or materials of middling hardness are to be treated, they may be fed in pieces fitting the cylinder bore, or the plunger may punch such pieces from a plate at each stroke. The apparatus may be heated externally to cause such pieces to unite while under pressure, but heating is unnecessary in the case of plastic substances, such as wax or clay. Soft metals may be treated in a molten condition. Fig. 1 shows the cylinder formed in a die M, the plunger S forcing the material out between the die and a mandrel D to form a tube R. Fig. 2 shows the cylinder formed in the mandrel D, which is provided with passages C to connect the cylinder to the annulus from which the tube issues. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement for extruding a number of wires, bars, &c. W simultaneously.
