Abstract
1641. Tulloch, H. Jan. 24. Sewage filters; supplying liquid.-An anaÙrobic apparatus for use in treating sewage and other foul waters comprises a tank a provided with a removable cover n and a perforated partition d, which separates a precipitation chamber c from a s e r i e s of anaerobic filters i divided off by vertical partitions h. The partition d may be formed of brickwork, concrete, wood, steel, or other suitable material. The sewage &c. may flow along a pipe y and central passage f into the chamber c, whence the liquid flows upwards through the filters i, and is discharged by means of radially-arranged channels v into a main channel k. Stone, clinker, coke, coal, burnt ballast, or other suitable material may be used as the filtering-medium in the filters i. The sewage sludge may be discharged by means of pipes w, s connected to a counterbalanced pipe t which is attached to a shaft u. A deflecting-plate y is mounted upon the shaft u, and serves to direct the sewage towards the outer parts of the chamber c. Steam, hot air, or gases, and cultivations of bacteria, may be introduced into the sewage through the pipes s, t. A brush or squeegee for cleansing the walls of the chamber c may be attached to the pipe t. Ammonia and other gases collecting beneath the cover n may be led away and utilized. The sewage may be caused to flow uniformly through the filters by means of an arm or arms secured to a rotating shaft, or the sewage supply pipe may be connected to a number of suitably-arranged branch pipes which discharge the sewage beneath the filters. The effluent from the anaÙrobic apparatus may be further treated in an aerobic bed provided with an archimedean screw for supplying air to the bed, and a pipe for use in introducing steam, heated air, or other gases, and bacterial cultivations. The archimedean screw may be actuated by a Barker's mill, through which the effluent is supplied to the bed.
