Extracts. -Relates to a process and apparatus for treating liquids with gases for absorbing, extracting, distilling, or for evaporating purposes, such as for the production of ammonia, benzene, &c., in the distillation of tar, mashes, &c., and consists in causing the liquid to be treated to be retained by the pressure of the gases or vapours, which are subjected to centrifugal action, against the inner surface of a casing on which are formed annular or helical chambers or cells open towards the centrifugal blades f, so that the gaseous pressure effects the closure of the chambers and prevents the liquid from escaping therefrom. The pressure of the liquid entering by the pipe m is such that there is a gradual overflow of the liquid from one annular passage to the next through pipes c. The lower part of the centrifugal apparatus is provided with scoops g to raise the liquid which accumulates in the bottom of the casing. The gases or vapours enter by the pipe k, and escape through the pipe s. Several forms of apparatus for carrying the invention into effect are described. The casing may be divided into chambers each separately supplied with liquids and gases, the blades f may have projections which partly fill the chamber a, the whole apparatus may be arranged in a horizontal position, the liquids and gases may be introduced at the bottom of the casing, which may be enclosed in brickwork for heating purposes, and baffle-plates may be placed in the chambers a to prevent a circular or gyratory movement of the liquid therein.
