Abstract
189,721. Poncelet, H. May 13, 1922. Projectiles; projectile fuzes.-Relates to grenades of the kind in which, when the grenade is discharged from a rifle by means of a bullet cartridge, the striker 14 for igniting a time fuze 12 is actuated by the blow of the bullet on a plate 18 arranged at the base and outside the body of the grenade. According to the invention, the plate 18 and the striker 14 are constituted bv a single movable member; and this member is held at safe by a transverse pin 22 which is sheared when the member receives the blow from the bullet. These external parts may be protected by a cap 25 secured by its edge into a groove 23 on the grenade. The protecting cap should be removed before the grenade is discharged, but in case of emergency may be left on and will not prevent the action. The striker has points 16, 17 with which it strikes a percussion cap for igniting the time fuze 12, which is surrounded at this end with a rubber tube and is connected at its other end to a detonator 8. The gases from the fuzes are vented off by an axial hole 13 through the striker. The grenade body 1 is a grooved cylinder with truncated conical ends as shown. The front end is closed by a screw plate 5 to confine the explosive charge 2, and by an outer screw plug 10 to confine the fuze. A conical hood may be added to reduce air resistance. The explosive charge is filled in through a side hole subsequently closed by a screw plug 3.
