Abstract

4120. Hall, W. Feb 16. Metal pipes and tubes, manufacture of. Relates to improvements in the process of shaping or tapering metallic articles described in Specification No. 11,192, A.D. 1894, by the use of an electrolytic bath in which the articles form the anodes, or by simply dipping them into an acid. Among articles which may be formed by this invention are metal pipes and tubes. The articles are formed round, or of a uniform shape, by rotating them within, or moving them through, the electrolyte during the process. This may be done by supporting the articles from a rotating frame, so that the articles, or bundles of them, are also rotated on their own axes. The articles may be thinned, tapered, &c. by drawing them through an electrolytic solution either at an intermittently or continuously uniform rate, or at a varying and gradually increasing or decreasing rate, or at an intermittently increasing or decreasing rate. Or the same result may be brought about by increasing or decreasing the intensity of the current employed while the article is drawn through the electrolyte.
