Abstract
189,287. Ransomes & Rapier, Ltd., and Stokes, Sir. F. W. S. Sept. 29, 1921. Disc.-A sluice gate is counterweighted so that it normally tends to open, and is provided with an automatic braking and releasing device normally preventing the gate from opening, but so controlled by a float or partially immersed weight that the gate will be free to open to a certain extent when the float or weight rises. The gate which is suspended from a cable A, Fig. 1, and counterweighted by a weight C is operated by a crab or other gear, one shaft F of which is screw threaded and carries the braking-device. The braking-device is mounted within a casing G, Figs. 1 and 3, having a projection G' engaging a fixed rod G<2> to prevent its rotation. Within the casing are two sets of friction discs, the set H, H<1>, H<2>, Fig. 3, engaging internal projections G<3> in the casing, while the set J, J<1> are mounted through a free. wheel drive on a sleeve J<2> having a projection J<3> running in a longitudinal slot in the shaft F. The disc H<1> is provided with an internally screwed boss H<3> engaging the screw thread on the shaft F, the disc H being provided with a similar boss but not screwed. A float or partially immersed weight L placed in a chamber communicating with the head water is supported on a chain L<2> running over a pulley M on the axle of which is a second pulley M<2> to which a rope N is attached which is connected at its other end to a lever 0. The lever O is fixed to a spindle carrying a second lever Q, the forked end of which engages a ring R carried in a recess in the boss H<4> of the disc H. The weight of the float normally forces the plate H inwards thus preventing the rotation of the shaft F. On the float L rising, pressure on the plate H is released and the plates H, H<1> come apart, this being assisted by a small weight P and also by springs placed between the plates, thus permitting the shaft F to rotate and the gate to rise under the action of the weight C. The braking device however is moved to the left by the screw until a position is reached, where the weight of the float L exerts sufficient pressure to lock the shaft. The rate at which the gate opens relatively to the rise of water may be varied by providing a series of holes N<2> for the attachment of the cord N. If it is desired that the amount shall not be proportional to the rise of water one of the pulleys preferably M<2> may be made cam shaped or eccentric.
