188,651. Nitrogen Corporation, (Assignees of Arnold, E. H., and Wakeford, W. T.).. Nov. 9, 1921, [Convention date]. Hand-hole doors.-An autoclave for the synthesis of ammonia is provided at both the upper and lower ends with a closure means capable of withstanding high temperatures and pressures. The autoclave, fitted with welded inlet and outlet tubes 7, 8 for the reaction gases, is reduced at the top and bottom, and each reduced end 5 is provided with an external threaded portion 15 upon which is mounted a cap 16 carrying a screw 17 which seats on to a pressure plate 19 fitting over the autoclave opening. The pressure plate and autoclave seating are provided with registering V-shaped grooves 21, 22 between which are interposed a packing ring 23 and sheets 24, 25 of packing material, such as metal or asbestos. Rotation of the screw 17 forces the pressure plate and packing against the autoclave opening. The autoclave, which is surrounded by insulating material, is also provided with a tube for a pyrometer, the tube passing either through the wall of the autoclave or through the upper closure means.
