Cutting.-Relates to machines of the type described in Specification 145,847 for trimming the heel end of a shoe sole to prepare it for attachment to a heel, and consists in means for adjusting the machine to trim seats for differing heels and means for gauging the heel to ascertain the requisite adjustment. As shown, the heel to be fitted is placed on a plate 60, Fig. 3, with its breast against an abutment 62. A handle 40 operating a slide 34 carrying rand crease engaging plates 30, all as described in the abovementioned Specification, is then moved until a gauge 64 carried by the slide 34 contacts with the heel. The shoe is then swung so that the margin of the heel end of the shoe is engaged by the plates 30, and the clutch is tripped so that the roller 74, Fig. 2, depresses the centre of the heel seat and the horizontally and vertically reciprocating knives trim off a U-shaped portion as described in the above-mentioned Specification. To prevent thin soles from buckling under the push of the horizontal knife, the plates 30 are serrated at 70, as are also the adjacent parts 72 of the shaft carrying the roller 74. The roller is also positively rotated by a pinion 76 smaller than itself so that the sole is wiped towards the horizontal knife as this advances. The vertical knife descends to assist in holding the work as the horizontal knife moves forward, the latter knife pauses while the vertical knife is raised out of the way.
