Ventilators; valves.-In a ship's ventilator, the shaft b is surrounded by a sleeve valve d running on rollers s and provided with valve faces j, which rest upon valve seats f, h on rings e, g when the valve is closed. The rings e, g are preferably formed of one casting connected by stays i, and secured to the cover-plate a and to the end of the shaft b, respectively. The valve d forms part of a float k, which, when the valve is open, rests by feet m on the bottom l of the float chamber, the side walls n of which are fitted to the cover-plate a and are provided with air openings o. A baffle-wall q is provided in the float chamber, and an outer shield p may be added. In the event of water entering the float chamber, the float k rises and closes the valve d until the water escapes by the drain holes r. A valve t, operated by hand, controls the opening at the end of the shaft b. The float k may be counterweighted and means may be provided to close it by hand. The float may be separate from the sleeve valve, and may take the form of an open-topped vessel provided with drain holes, and be so arranged that water entering the openings o enters the tank and causes it to fall, in which case it is connected to the valve by ropes passing over pulleys. In the form shown, the ventilator is above the deck c, but it may be located below it, with the cover-plate a flush with the deck. In this case the openings o are replaced by a grating round the cover-plate beyond the wall q, which can be closed by a sliding shutter, and a pipe is provided to carry off water from the float chamber.
