Combined turning, drilling, and milling machines. - In a combination machine tool in which a lathe is combined with mechanism for performing drilling, slotting, milling, and like operations, the bed a is provided with vertical standards e supporting a girder f having a carriage g containing a vertical spindle h driven from the lathe headstock b through spur gearing m, clutch ma, shaft k, and bevel-gearing j. The shaft k is journaled at one end in the carriage and the other end. slides in a bearing l on one of the standards e. The vertical spindle may be positioned by rack-and-pinion gearing operated from a hand-wheel p and is provided with fine and coarse feeds controlled from hand-wheels v, s respectively. The headstock spindle carries on its outer end a large faceplate w and the bed has an extension a<1> carrying an adjustable tool rest x. In key-seating &c., a milling-cutter is carried by the spindle h and the work is either clamped to the bed and the spindle head traversed or the work is carried and fed by the lathe saddle.
