Abstract
182,964. Green, H. W., and Wandless, J. B. April 25, 1921. Reel and web apparatus.-Relates to picture - displaying machines of the type set forth in Specifications 12370/14 and 9363/15, in one form of which the pictures are on fabric wound on spring rollers removably mounted in the periphery of an intermittingly rotated drum or carrier, means being provided for withdrawing the end of each picture fabric in turn from its roller across the path of a traversing exhibiting roller, and for holding it while this roller is moved along its path and back and for returning the fabric to its drum after the return movement of the exhibiting roller. The drums b are mounted in casings b<1> formed as carriages having slide rollers b<2> which run in guideways a', so that a drum b may be replaced by another containing a fresh set of picture rollers c. The casings b' may be held in place by levers d pivoted to the framing a at d<1>. The drums b are rotated intermittingly through Geneva-stop motion by a pin e' on a continuously moving endless chain e engaging projections on the Geneva-stop disc. Each picture fabric carries at its free end a rod g with projecting ends adapted to be engaged by grippers which draw the fabric across the path of the traversing roller. The grippers g<4>, Fig. 3<a>, are mounted on levers g<1> fixed on a rod g<2> pivoted in the free ends of the locking levers d, and consist of projections g<5>, pins g<6>, and a spring-pressed grooved member g<7>. The grippers g<4> are swung towards and away from the drums b respectively by spring g<9> and by levers g<10> engaged by the exhibiting roller carrier. When brought to the drum b the projections g<8> contact with the edges of an opening in a peripheral portion of the casing b<1>, but the member g<7> advances carrying with it by means of the groove the rod g from between the pins g<6>, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3<a>, thus allowing the rod g to leave the grippers as the drum turns, and the next rod is received in the groove g<7> and brought between the pins g<6> as the levers g<1> move away. The carriers h, h' for the traversing rollers h<2>, h<3> are moved and actuated as described in Specification 9363/15 by the pin e<7> engaging curved slots h<5>. The pin e<7> is mounted in a bearing h<6> arranged to move longitudinally in a lever h<7> pivoted to a block h<8> sliding in a slot h<9> in the lower carrier h<1>. Alternatively, two separate equally running chains may be located at each side of the machine, and take the pin e<7> between them, the block h<8>, slot h<9>, and Jever h' being dispensed with. The carriers h, h<1> are counterbalanced by a weight i. The rollers h<2>, h<3> are pivotally mounted, near the middle of their axes, to the carriers h, h<1>. The pivotal mounting on the lower carrier h<1> may also support spring- pressed pins h<12> which carry freely a gap-bar h<13> which serves to hide the space between the two rollers h<2>, h<3>. The gap-bar h<13> preferably moves in front of a sheet of glass h<18> attached to a hinged frame h<17>, and lifts with this frame when the latter is opened. Spring-pressed hooks j support the gap-bar h<13> when at the top of its path to allow the frame h<17> to be opened, the hooks j being automatically moved out of engaging position each time the top moving mechanism for the rod g is operated. To facilitate removal of the drums b, means may be provided for withdrawing any selected rod g from its position opposite the opening in the casing b<1> when the gripper g<4> enters. The means consists of a hand-operated spring-pressed lever k by which a pin k<1>, coaxial with the drum b, can be pressed towards it. The pin k<1> has a conical end k<2> on which bears a radially-guided pin k<3> which operates a forked lever k<5> at each side of the drum b, which levers k<5> engage and move one of the rods g. This release mechanism resets itself automatically on rotation of the drum b by the provision of a groove k<6> into which the pin k<3> snaps and out of which it can pass through a side gap k<7>. The gap-bar h<13> may be guided independently of the frame h<17> by mounting it between two sheets of glass carried in a removable tubular framework. The spring roller may be of the form shown in Fig. 11, in which the roller c' is universally pivoted at its middle to the rod c<3> by means of a flange c<8> having rounded edges, the opening in each end c<9> of the roller being large enough to allow lateral play. The drums b may be arranged vertically, with the carriers h, h<1> &c. moving horizontally. The pictures may be intermittingly illuminated with the same or changing colours, and for this purpose a switch may be employed consisting of a spiral spring secured at one end to one of the chains so as to be drawn thereby across a block of insulating material having contacts connected to the lighting circuits.
