Abstract

178,901. Hamilton, J. R. Jan. 17, 1921. Driving-gear.-In means for converting reciprocating into rotary motion, and vice versa, the, or each, reciprocatory member carries cam-surfaces contacting with a number of radial fingers on the rotary shaft. As applied to an internalcombustion or other engine having an even number of cylinders, the piston rods or connecting- rods d are coupled in pairs by a slotted link h, Fig. 1, or a frame h, Fig. 2, and have pairs of cam-surfaces e engaging the extremities f of, or rollers carried by, three or other number of fingers c, which are secured to the main or other shaft b and preferably run in a crank-case. One of the pairs of cam-surfaces may be omitted. The device replaces reduction-gearing, and is directly reversible. When converting reciprocations into rotation, a fly-wheel may be employed.
