Elastic-grip joints.-Consists in means for pneumatically expanding an elastic tube in order to pass it onto, or enclose in it, a body whose outer diameter is greater than the unexpanded internal diameter of the tube. As shown in Fig. 1, the elastic tube i is fitted at one end to a nozzle h, and is enclosed in a rigid perforated sleeve r, by which the degree of expansion cf the tube is limited. A hollow piston-rod c having a detachable conical end plug g is forced by compressed air through the tube i. Ports a<2> in the cylinder cover a<1> enable some air to escape around the piston-rod to the back of the plug g, to facilitate the passage of the piston-rod through the tube. When the piston-rod protrudes at the free end of the tube i, the plug g is removed, and the body s, Fig. 2, to be sheathed, is inserted in the end of the rod. By means of a cock f<1> and a port b<1> in the piston b, the interior of the piston-rod is next connected to a suction pipe f and the body s is drawn into the rod. The piston-rod is then with. drawn from the tube, leaving the body s within it. Alternatively, the body s is drawn into the piston-rod by a wire or the like passing therethrough. In another form, the tube passes through a vacuum chamber and is expanded by the atmospheric pressure in its interior. Means for connecting the tube i to the nozzle h are also described. If the body s is of an elastic nature, it may be stretched during insertion by a cord s<1> attached to its outer end.
