Abstract

177,128. Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Westing- house, H. H.). March 12, 1921, [Convention date]. Heat of compression, absorbing.-The cooling- jacket of a steam-driven air-compressor, through which exhaust steam from the engine is passed for cooling purposes, is formed with a helical partition or other form of baffle. The Figure shows a compressor having high and low pressure cylinders 4, 5, the pistons in which are connected by rods 9, 8 with the pistons of low and high pressure steam cylinders 3, 2, respectively. The cylinder 4 is formed with an annular chamber 11 which may be cored and is connected with a cored passage 12 leading to the exhaust steam outlet 13. A helical rib or partition 14 within the jacket cause the steam to flow uniformly, with the avoidance of air pockets, before passing to the outlet 15. The low-pressure cylinder jacket may be similarly constructed.
